What Do You Need to Rent a Car in Another Country
I’m back from Costa Rica folks! So…I’ve had the time to catch up on some TV. Here are my thoughts:
Last of Us: I’m not watching this because it’s too sad! I’ve played both video games and I regret paying money just to be sad😢.
Black Panther: I enjoyed this movie.
Andor: I appreciate the cinematography, but I don’t see what the big deal is yet. So far, it’s just about a fugitive running from the law, but maybe I’m still at the slow part.
First off, just because you have a U.S. driver’s license doesn't mean you can drive anywhere you want to in the world.
Don’t worry though! You don't need to retake the test, which is a lucky thing since half of ya’ll can’t parallel park!🙄 However, getting an international driving permit is vital. It’s a license that allows you to drive around the country legally during your stay.
In some places like Costa Rica, you need a car because public transportation isn’t great…
Getting your international permit is easy IF you follow these simple steps:
You have Two Choices: 1. Apply in person (store locator) or 2. Apply by mail
So, what would I do? 🤔…
…Go in person if you can. If you do that, you can get your permit the same day. Find an office near you.
Items You’ll Need:
Form of ID:
Passport
A valid driver’s license
Passport Photos (optional for in-person because the business takes photos)
$20 cash, check, or money order
Target Destinations → I like to pick multiple countries, especially the ones with the *asterisk* so I don't have to come back.
Fill out the form, preferably beforehand. You can find it online.
Step-by-Step Instructions for In-Person:
Fill out the form
Create an appointment
Go to your appointment… A crucial step .. HA! 🤣
Hand the employee the necessary items/information
…Wait 5 minutes…
Eureka! You have now acquired your international driving license!
It's that simple.
When do I get my permit?
In person→ you’ll get your license on the same day
Mail→ It could take a couple of weeks to get your license
When does the permit expire? … You have 1 year (yes, you have to renew it every year which kind of sucks 😑).
