Last week, I wrote about flight accidents. While talking to some people at a bar over the weekend, they shared their fears about flying.
I explained that flying is still one of the safest ways to travel and showed them statistics proving that both accidents and deaths are down compared to previous years.
Their reaction was telling.
I watched as they processed this information, but their silence made it clear - they weren't convinced by the data.
This shows how our brains can trick us. When something happens recently, like these accidents, we tend to think it happens more often than it really does.
Imagine this: You're rushing through security, excited for your next adventure, when suddenly—you're stopped.
Your ID isn't REAL ID-compliant, and now you're scrambling to find another form of identification.
Sounds stressful, right?
But don't worry—I've got you covered!
With the May 7, 2025, deadline approaching, it's time to figure out if you really need a REAL ID.
Let's break it down so you can travel worry-free.
Do You Already Have a REAL ID?
If your driver's license or ID does not have a star or a flag on it, then you do not have a REAL ID-compliant document. Continue reading.

What's REAL ID?
Simply put, REAL ID is a federal requirement that makes sure state-issued IDs meet national security standards. After May 7, 2025, you'll need either a REAL ID or another acceptable form of identification (like a passport) to:
- Take domestic flights (This is what we care about)
- Visit military bases
- Enter federal buildings that require ID
What You Need to Know
REAL ID is rolling out to all states, and you can think of it as your ticket to hassle-free domestic travel!
Quick note: You can't apply for REAL ID online—you'll need to visit a Driver Licensing Center in person with your documents. Be careful of any websites claiming they can process your REAL ID application online—they're not legitimate and could put your personal information at risk.
Another quick note: Make sure the Driver Licensing Center you go to can issue REAL IDs. I went to a licensing center that wasn't able to do that, so I had to visit another one. 😟
Do You Need One?
If you don't get a REAL ID, you'll need to carry another approved form of identification (like a passport) for domestic flights and federal building access after May 7, 2025.
