The Deception of Discount Airlines
While the “cheap” flight prices of discount airlines can be alluring, unsuspecting buyers don't realize what they're getting into. In reality, after factoring in all the hidden fees and restrictions, the cost of flights are the same or even higher than regular airlines.
Discount airlines use the business model of offering fewer conveniences in order to provide cheaper flights. However, their lack of amenities and hidden fees can be deal-breakers.🙅🏽♂️
For Example:
Smaller Seats: The seats are often significantly smaller which can be uncomfortable for taller passengers. I’m 6’2” and the seats are so small that I sometimes have to visit a chiropractor after my flight. It can be so bad…,that if I had the option of staying in the cargo hold, I’d opt for that instead.
Limited Carry-On Space: Discount airlines like Frontier and Spirit charge high fees for carry-on luggage, making it difficult to travel with more than just 1 personal item. This is perfect if you’re a fugitive traveling with just the clothes on your back, but most of us want to bring enough items to feel comfortable on our trip. On these airlines however, your comfort will cost you…Carry-on luggage can easily cost an EXTRA $60 one way!
Strict Rules: Some discount airlines have strict rules that can also be costly if not followed. For instance, you might be charged for printing a boarding pass at the airport. Some airlines even charge you for water on international flights! Expect to be parched throughout the whole flight AND if you have the basic human need for water, get that credit card out!
Questionable Planes: Discount airlines can have older and less reliable planes, which can be anxiety-inducing for some passengers. As a frequent traveler, I even get anxious when I hear the snap, crackle and pop of a discounted plane as it takes off. 🤣 You get what you pay for!
In summary, discount airlines can be a good option for short, weekend trips when you’re on a budget. But, it's important to be aware of all the hidden fees and rules before booking. Spirit may appear cheaper at first glance, but after factoring in the costs of carry-on luggage, water, snacks and post-flight therapy, the actual price might end up being the same or even more expensive than a regular airline.
